Questions to Ask Before Booking a Wedding DJ

If you’re planning your wedding, choosing the right DJ is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make for the evening. A good DJ doesn’t just play music, they control the flow of the night and keep everything feeling natural.

After more than 20 years DJing weddings across the UK, these are the questions I always recommend asking before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Experience matters. A DJ doing weddings regularly will understand timings, structure and how to handle a mixed crowd. In my case, I perform at weddings every week across the UK, so I’ve seen how different venues and crowds work and how to adapt properly on the night.

Some DJs stick to fixed playlists, while others adapt to the room. It’s worth knowing which approach they take, as it can make a big difference to how the night feels. I’m always happy to take requests where they fit, but I balance them with what’s already working so the energy doesn’t drop.

You want someone who works with you, not someone who just turns up and guesses. I always go through music properly in the lead up to the wedding so I understand what you want, what you don’t want, and how you want the night to feel.

A lot of weddings need someone to guide the evening, announce key moments and keep things running smoothly. I regularly handle introductions, first dances and key moments so everything flows naturally without it feeling forced or over the top.

This is a non-negotiable. Professional DJs should always have a backup plan. I always carry backup equipment so there’s no risk of the night being affected if something goes wrong.

Most venues will require this as standard. All of my equipment is PAT tested and I’m fully insured, so there are no issues with venue requirements.

Ask to see photos, as this makes a big difference to how your evening looks. I use a clean, modern setup that fits in with the venue rather than taking over the room.

This is what separates a good DJ from a great one. It’s not just about playing good songs, it’s about knowing when to play them. I’m constantly watching how people respond and adjusting the music so the dancefloor builds naturally.

You should always have control over what you want and what you don’t. I encourage couples to send over playlists, and I use that as a guide while still reading the room on the night.

A proper DJ will keep the energy flowing rather than letting the dancefloor drop between tracks. I mix where it works to keep things moving, but I also know when a clean transition is better depending on the moment.

Timing matters, especially if your venue has tight schedules. I always arrive in plenty of time to set up properly and make sure everything is ready well before guests enter the room.

Familiarity with venues can help things run more smoothly. I work across a wide range of venues throughout the UK, so I’m used to adapting quickly to different setups and requirements.

Some DJs only cover the evening, but I also offer full-day coverage including ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast if needed.

Good DJs stay in touch and go through everything properly before the day. I always speak with couples in the lead up to finalise timings, music and key moments so everything feels relaxed and well organised.

These moments need to feel natural, not rushed or awkward. I work with you beforehand so everything is planned, then guide it on the night so it flows properly without feeling staged.

Things don’t always run exactly to schedule. I keep an eye on timings throughout the evening and help guide things where needed so everything stays on track without it feeling forced.

It’s important that your DJ’s style fits what you want. I play a wide range of music depending on the crowd and the brief, focusing on what works on the dancefloor rather than sticking to one genre.

You should always feel comfortable with who you’re hiring. I’m always happy to have a chat beforehand to talk through your plans and answer any questions.

Real feedback from other couples says a lot. I’ve built up 60+ five-star Google reviews from weddings and venues across the UK, which gives a good idea of what to expect.

This is the big one. It’s not about having a huge playlist, it’s about knowing what works and when to play it. I build the night gradually and adjust based on how the room responds so the dancefloor stays consistent.

There should always be a contingency plan. In the unlikely event I couldn’t attend, I have trusted industry contacts I can call on to make sure you’re still covered.

Every DJ faces this at some point. The key is not to panic or force it. I adjust the music, reset the direction slightly and build things back up naturally.

It’s important everything is clear upfront. My pricing includes a professional setup, quality sound and lighting, planning in advance and full support in the run up to the wedding.

Some couples want full input, others are happy to leave it to the DJ. I work around whatever suits you, whether that’s detailed playlists or just a general direction.

Choosing the right wedding DJ is about more than just music. It’s about finding someone who understands how a wedding flows and can adapt to the room so everything feels natural from start to finish.
